GateWay Community College is introducing the Geckos Connect Scholarship. Applicants must have performed at least 100 hours of service-based, volunteer activities on or off campus over the course of the Spring 2017 semester by April. Additionally, students must have completed the FAFSA, be able to demonstrate financial need, and be enrolled in at least 3 credit hours. GWECHS students who are enrolled in college classes are also eligible to apply.
Examples of activities to count toward the Geckos Connect Scholarship may include:
- · Assisting with on-campus events
- · Volunteering at community agencies
- · Participating in campus-sponsored events off campus
- · Service Learning projects
- · Honors projects
Students must track their hours on a time sheet to be provided by Student Life, located in MA 1132. Each event must be logged with a signature from a college employee, or activity supervisor verifying the student’s participation.
Students who have completed these requirements will provide a short essay describing their favorite activity. Essays should include a brief description of the activity and the student’s role, how participating affected the student’s connection to their campus, community and peers, and why it matters. The best essays will demonstrate a clear connection between the activity and the student’s degree path, career goals, or personal passions. Winners will be chosen by a committee of college employees.
Scholarships will be available in spring, and summer semesters. GateWay will award 8 scholarships for $500 each in the spring semester and 4 scholarships for $250 each in the summer. (Summer applicants need to complete 50 hours of engagement activities to be eligible.) One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded each year to a student who has shown extraordinary commitment to on-campus and community engagement activities.
Scholarship Application will be available April 3, 2017 on AcademicWorks. Application deadline will be April 21st, 2017. Service hours, must be completed prior to submitting application.
